Consulting

A scene of productivity that includes a phone, laptop, pens, notepads, and a hand that is writing in an open notebook.

Expert support for fellowship, award, and residency applications; pitches, proposals, and submissions; studio visits, and more.

You don’t have to be 100% confident to move forward with an application!

You just need a partner and a plan.

My deep knowledge of art-world operations will support you to create award-winning proposals and applications. Here’s a small sample of my experience you can employ to your benefit:

• I’ve completed my own successful applications for regional, national, and international residencies, awards, and fellowships.

• My consulting clients have won Guggenheim Fellowships, United States Artists Awards, and other honors.

• Each spring and fall, I assist one of the largest funders in the US with their grant-approval process for arts nonprofits.

• I’ve served as a juror for organizations such as Fulbright, Headlands Center for the Arts, and the Oregon Arts Commission.

• I’ve been an art critic since 2007, publishing exhibition reviews and essays in magazines like Artforum, Frieze, and Art in America; I hold a Professional Certificate in Editing from UC Berkeley; and for five years, I was the Editor in Chief of the international art blog Daily Serving.

For most projects, I offer a four-part consultation:

  • We look at your goal.

Contact me using the button below, and we’ll set up a 30-minute phone or Zoom meeting to talk about your goal, what you’ve already prepared, and what’s left to be done.

  • I review your materials.

After our meeting, you’ll send me your in-progress/completed documents to review, plus links to your website/portfolio, the application guidelines, etc. I’ll review all your materials and make notes, edits, and suggestions.

  • We meet again.

Next, we’ll have a 75-minute Zoom consultation in which I’ll offer point-by-point suggestions for strengthening your proposal, and you can ask specific questions about any part of your application or ancillary documents like your website or social media.

  • I'll follow up.

After our consultation, I’ll send a detailed follow-up email that contains additional answers, edits, links, etc. If any further meetings are needed, we’ll schedule them.

“Bean’s organization and structure kept me on task, and I gained confidence from her guidance and feedback. She was an invaluable participant in the process, and input that she offered was critical to the final plan I submitted. There is no doubt in my mind that I would not have been able to take on the challenge of preparing my application without her support.”
